Grand Rapids Community Board of Trustee member, Brandy Lovelady Mitchell, has been placed on administrative leave from her Deputy Superintendent position with Grand Rapids Public Schools through the end of the school year.
This will be Mitchell’s second time placed on leave since starting her role back in August of 2022. The first time took place in 2024, when she was being investigated for claims of disrespectful behavior.
Director of Communications for GRPS, Luke Stier, confirmed the news, however did not provide additional information as to what led to the decision.

Mitchell and GRPS Superintendent Leadriane Roby could not be reached for comment.
Mitchell formerly served as Chairperson of the GRCC Board of Trustees. Her role as Chairperson began in February of 2024 and concluded in December of 2025. Chairperson Salvador Lopez was newly appointed to the chair seat.
No clear decision has been made on whether Mitchell will resume her role as deputy superintendent following the investigation.
