A man who police are identifying as a Grand Rapids Community College student was found dead Monday in the Devos Parking lot at Grand Valley State University.

Phu Quoc Thieu Tran, 38, was found by GVSU Pew Campus security during a routine parking lot check Monday morning. Grand Rapids Police responded to the scene where Tran was found reclined in the front seat of his white two-door Toyota with a blanket on.

GRCC officials are working to confirm when Tran was enrolled at the college, however, Grand Rapids Police confirm a GRCC ID was found in his wallet.

“It does appear that he was living out of his car,” Grand Rapids Police Lt. Patrick Merrill said.

According to police, Tran was using his laptop at Grand Valley to research chest pains on WebMD. His laptop was left at the college.

An autopsy revealed Tran suffered a heart attack brought on by Arteriosclerosis (cardiovascular disease).

Tran was Vietnamese and born in United States. He was from Kentwood.
