A special pediatric cancer awareness match brought special results for the No. 12 ranked Grand Rapids Community College Volleyball team as it defeated Lake Michigan College 3-0 (25-10,25-17,25-9) in its final regular season and home match of the year on Tuesday, finishing conference play 14-0.

The last time the team went undefeated in conference play was in 2012.

“It is only the third time we have been undefeated throughout the whole conference,” GRCC Coach Chip Will said. “This is a special group that is able to grind through a whole season and not lose focus.”

Getting off to a slow start GRCC trailed 6-1 in the first set before rallying together as a team and finishing fast.

“Sometimes we start a little rough, but we usually find a way to come together and find a way out of it,” GRCC Sophomore Rosalyn Wyse said.

Abbie Gortsema led GRCC with 14 kills, adding one error on 18 service attempts, hitting a record .723. Michelle Holland led with 14 assists followed by Jamie Barrows’ 13. Amanda Glaza added 11 digs.

With the regular season now over, GRCC will play the winner of the Mott vs.Lansing Community College match at 2 p.m. Saturday  at the 2014 MCCAA Volleyball Tournament iAuburn Hills.
