The Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team won its first game of the season defeating Calvin College’s junior varsity 65-51 on Monday at the Ford Fieldhouse.
GRCC started out the game strong. A swarming defense, good passing, and rebounding allowed them to grab an early double-digit lead and end the first half up 36-28 .
“We struggled on offense all night,” Calvin Coach Heather Swierenga said.
Coming out of the locker for the second half, GRCC lost a little momentum, but never lost the lead as they rallied together as a team. The Raiders shifted into another gear to pick the pace back up and finish the night off with a good win.
GRCC’s Kristen Schubring led the Raiders with 24 points
“It was a solid, solid game for us,” GRCC Coach Tracy Little said. “We did a lot things that do not show up in statistics but that contribute to a majority of wins.
GRCC’s Sara Karamol echoed Littles comments adding, “We all played really well tonight. We came together as a team and got it done tonight.”
GRCC will play Hope College JV at 5:30 p.m.Wednesday at the Ford Fieldhouse.
