GRCC trustee leaves board after 13 years

Monday marked the final Grand Rapids Community College Board of Trustee meeting for trustee Margo Anderson.

Anderson has been with the board for 13 years and received a standing ovation for her final comments.

“This is my last board meeting and I have a lot of mixed emotions,” Anderson said. “I have enjoyed my 13 years … I’m not saying goodbye … Time and memories cannot erase the strides of this college, but I do have some concerns with the Diversity Learning Center and Diversity Lecture Series and it seems like Affirmative Action has faded in the 21st century.”

GRCC president Steven Ender said he is sad to see Anderson leave.

“Ms. Anderson has demonstrated great service to the board in her situation,” Ender said. “Clearly, she will be missed at the board table.”

In other business, Lisa Freiburger, Vice President of Finance and Administration, delivered a report on this past summer’s construction and a look ahead at future projects.

“We are very pleased with the results,” Freiburger said. “And we are grateful for the amount of work that went into (the construction) to upgrade … student learning for many years to come.”

Other highlights of the meeting included the swearing in of new trustee Cynthia Bristol and the re-swearing in of Deb Bailey, as well as the board approving a small change to the contract for campus police.

After an initial oversight in the contract negotiations, the board unanimously voted to approve the addendum to provide campus police with the same rates as all staff at GRCC when enrolling in classes.
