The Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team defeated the Jackson College Jets 62-53 on Friday at the Ford Fieldhouse. The win puts the Raiders at 6-14 on the season.

GRCC started the game fast and furious leading 33-19 to at the end of the first half.

“We were very sloppy the first half,” Jackson College coach Courtney Ivan said. “If we had the energy we had in the second half it would have been a different ball game.”

Bad shot selection from GRCC and a strong press from Jackson had the Raiders Trailing 52-51 with 2:55 to go in the game.

“We got off to a great start,” GRCC coach John Maciak said. “They caught on fire there to start the second half.”

A technical and fifth personal foul by Jackson’s Teqwa’zha Terry with 1:21 left to play put GRCC guard Andrea Straw on the line where she hit four free throws in a row to give the Raiders a 60-51 lead and put the game out of Jackson’s reach for Jackson.

GRCC ‘s forward Kristen Schubring led all scorers with 19 points, adding 12 rebounds for a double-double. GRCC ‘s forward Sara Karamol also had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Andrea Straw tallied 17 points, going 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

GRCC plays at Lansing Community College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday Feb 18.
