In its final home game of the season, the Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team fell to the Lake Michigan College Red Hawks 72-56 Friday at the Ford Fieldhouse.
A slow start and missed shots early on had GRCC scoring only two points in the first five minutes of the game. The Raiders also found themselves trailing by as many as 15 points at the half way point of the first half.
“We missed about five or six point blank lay-ups to start the game,” GRCC coach John Maciak said. “Today we shot pathetic.”
A small run allowed GRCC to pick away at LMC’s lead and head into the locker room trailing by seven at halftime.
The Raiders were never able to recover from the deficit and trailed the whole game getting outscored 39-30 in the second half.
“I was impressed with the way our girls came out in the second half,” Lake Michigan College coach Jason Cooper said. “They really picked the intensity up.”
Lake Michigan’s Sabrina Trujillo led all scorers with 27 points. Teammate Shalay Stevens tallied 16 points and 20 rebounds for a double-double
Jayla Branch led GRCC with 16 points, with Sara Karamol tallying 17 rebounds.
GRCC finishes out the regular season when they play at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, 5:30 p.m. Monday Feb 23.
