The Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team opened up their season with a 70-60 victory against Mott Community College on November 1 .
From the start of the game, GRCC’s intensity on the defensive end was at an all time high, forcing Mott CC to commit 26 turnovers.
“Defensively, we were aggressive,” said Head Coach Dave Glazier. “We were fighting over screens, communicating (and) had active hands. We played good team defense.”
The Raiders had a lot of contribution from a number of players in tonight’s game.
Off the bench, Freshman Guard Keaira Lipscomb led the way for the Raiders, scoring 17 points, with seven steals. Other great performances were from Freshman Forward Emily Pendred put up six points with 11 rebounds, along with Freshman Guard Allazae Lloyd scoring 10 points, grabbing seven rebounds, with four steals and four blocks.
With the game becoming tight in the second half, GRCC stepped up defensively to put the game away.
“Players stepped up, only allowed 12 points in the fourth quarter,” Glazier said. “We didn’t quit.”
With this being their first win on the season, The Raiders continue to look forward and find things to improve on.
“I walked out happy with our performance,” Glazier said. “We always can shake things up defensively, and offensively. We have to work to improve and we will keep working.”
The next game for the women’s team will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the GRCC Ford Fieldhouse against Kalamazoo College.
