Grand C.I.T.Y event coming soon

The Grand C.I.T.Y. Sports organization will host their first annual City of Champions Youth Sports Awards this Friday, July 14, at the Wealthy Theatre. This event will also be the organization’s first fundraising event.

The City of Champions will be a Red Carpet affair with suit and tie apparel required for all athletes unless they’re wearing their team’s jersey. This event will acknowledge and honor Grand Rapids’ brightest student-athletes along with community sports heroes including current and former professional NFL, NBA and boxing athletes.

“Grand Rapids doesn’t do a good job of recognizing the great athletes we have in our city,” said Chris Sain Jr., Co-Founder of Grand C.I.T.Y. Sports and Coordinator of Retention at Grand Rapids Community College.  “So with Grand C.I.T.Y. being a local sports organization in town, we want to take the time out to recognize our student-athletes and professional athletes. We want them to know that their hard work isn’t unnoticed.”

The awards that will be presented will include individual and team categories including:

Lifetime Achievement Award

Hall Of Fame Award

Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award

Golfer of the Year Award

Basketball Player of the Year Award

Football Player of the Year Award

Baseball Team of the Year Award

AAU Basketball Team of the Year Award

Football Team of the Year Award

Basketball Team of the Year Award

Current Professional athletes such as Kavon Frazier of the Dallas Cowboys, David Harris of the New England Patriots, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin a Professional Boxer, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. who is also a Professional Boxer, will be acknowledged at the event.

All awards will be determined by community votes.

The contenders for each award will vary from little league to high School teams. All of the proceeds made from Friday’s event will go to the Grand C.I.T.Y. Scholarship fund and other non-profit organizations in the community.
Grand Rapids Community College students will be volunteering for this event and more volunteers would be greatly appreciated. Contact Chris Sain Jr. at csain@grcc.edu for volunteer opportunities.
