Grand Rapids Community College International Guitar Series returns this fall with a classical guitar performance by Jordan Dodson and a guitar giveaway to a member of the audience.
The 2017-2018 GRCC International Guitar Series is a four-part event that highlights the skills of four talented classical guitar players.
The concert series kicks off Thurs. Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in GRCC’s newly renovated Music Center.
Dodson has been recognized for his skills as a guitar player and instructor. He has performed internationally and is also a member of several chamber ensembles in New York City.
Following Dodson’s performance, GRCC president Bill Pink, will select one of the tickets for the event for a prize. That individual will be able to take home the Cordoba C5 classical guitar. Each member of the audience will be eligible to win the guitar simply by watching the performance.
The guitar was donated by GRCC’s own Jonathan Marshall through a collaboration of Jonathan Marshall Guitars and Cordoba. Marshall is an adjunct music instructor and a concert classical guitar dealer. He was able to incorporate his freelance work as a guitar salesman into the International Guitar Series. Marshall has been able to promote the event in his first year as the series coordinator with a guitar giveaway to get the concert series underway.
Dodson will start the series this week, but three more performances will follow in the upcoming months.
Xavier Jara, the 2016 Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition winner, comes to GRCC on Thurs. Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
Brian Morris, GRCC’s professor of guitar and 27-year member of the GRCC music faculty, will perform on Thurs. Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
The final performance will be by multi-award winning guitar player, Robert Gruca, on Thurs. March 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Each performance will be held in the Music Center’s Linn Maxwell Keller Recital Hall (room 200) across from the parking ramp.
Tickets are available at Music Center and at the door right before the performance. They are also available on GRCC’s website. General Admission tickets are $15 and GRCC students and senior citizens’ tickets are $10.
Parking is available across the street at the GRCC Parking Ramp for $3.50.
