Grand Rapids Community College’s Student Alliance will host the first Cat Café Relaxer on Thursday, Jan. 18 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Farside Room on the first floor of the Student Center.
Students can cuddle up with some furry friends while enjoying their afternoon coffee. GRCC’s Student Alliance partnered with Grand Rapids’ own Happy Cat Cafe GR and Carol’s Ferals for this event.
Carol’s Ferals is an organization that specializes in capturing, neutering and releasing feral cats. Cats or kittens who are well behaved are put up for adoption. Between eight and 10 cats will be at the relaxer and all of them are adoptable.
“They want to use this opportunity to advertise the work they do for our community,” said Cale Merdzinski, president of GRCC’s Student Alliance. “Specifically, how both of their organizations work together to catch stray cats and get them into loving homes.”
Refreshments will be available for students as well as for the cats. Merdzinski encourages students to stop by the Farside Room for some cat cuddles and relaxation.
“Every semester starts off a bit different, and I personally struggle in the winter to maintain my motivation,” Merdzinski said. “I want to help all GRCC students relax during this important second week of classes.”
Although this event is new to GRCC, the cat café trend is certainly not new to Grand Rapids. Happy Cat Cafe GR, is located at 447 Division Ave. S and open from Tuesday to Sunday.
