This month the Grand Rapids Community College softball team is gearing up for their first game of the upcoming season.
The season opener will be held at 1 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 9 at Schoolcraft College.
After the game, the team is headed off for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for six days of intense training at The Ripken Experience. The Ripken Experience is a state of the art softball and baseball facility named after Calvin Ripken, a famous shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles.
The Raiders’ home opener is slated for Fri., March 23 at 3 p.m. against Mid Michigan Community College at Belknap Park.
This will be Coach Brian Skudre’s second year coaching the team along with assistant coaches Courtney Bishop and Brooke Morgans first. Skudre has an impressive 16 years of coaching experience and is excited to build up the team as many of the players are new. A couple of the players are returning members bringing experience to the team.
“We should be very competitive this year,” Skudre said. “While we are young, we have a lot of athleticism and a fantastic work ethic.”
The first of nine home games is scheduled for March 23 versus Lake Michigan College at Belknap Park. A full list of dates and times for games can be found here. All games are free to attend so be sure to get out and support the team.
The coaches are still looking for a few extra players to fill out the roster so any women who are interested should contact Bill Firn by email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone at, or (616) 234-4262 or head over to the Ford Fieldhouse for more information.
The team is looking for students with a minimum of a year or two of prior experience. All players need to complete a physical with the team doctor prior to competition.
