The Grand Rapids Community College men’s basketball team scored a huge victory against The Great Lakes Christian Crusaders on Thursday.
It was a great start for the Raiders. Johnny Davis, sophomore, was able to score 14 points in consecutive baskets and Peyton Vis,freshman, contributed 11 points off the bench.
The Crusaders are a team with great ball movement and the Raiders using their hands instead of their feet, got them into foul trouble early, causing the Crusaders to stay in the game scoring 10 points off free throws.
“We need to focus on defense and guarding the ball,” said GRCC Coach Jeff Bauer. The Raiders led the first half 51-37, thanks to Davisand Vis.
Leading into the second half, the Raiders knew they could use their height to an advantage. Scoring points from the inside they became unmatchable.
“Our team came together well after a long break… by now we know each other well on and off the court,” said freshman Ryel Daye.
Davis lead the team in the second half with a double double, 24 points and 10 total rebounds.
“Let’s get back on the winning column,” Bauer said..
And that is exactly what they did, winning score 106-71.
“We are still in learning mode” Bauer said. “Learning how to trust me, each other and trust what we are doing.”
With a total of 23 assists, 12 lead by David Hearns, Thursday’s win is an indicator that the Raiders are well on their way to a good season.
The Raiders next game is against Calvin College JV at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 9 at Calvin College.
