A rude awakening, indeed: the challenges of similar ringtones and alarm sounds (Jamie Miller/The Collegiate).

By Jamie Miller

It was a school night – a short night for me, considering I slept from 5 a.m. to 5:35 p.m. and yet I was exhausted maybe because I overslept maybe because I proceeded to devour every sugary snack I could find once I lumbered up the stairs. Point being I was tired, really tired like after Thanksgiving-feeding-frenzy tired. So I took a shower and decided to go to bed thinking I would have a nice easy night of sleeping. I was wrong.

My problems started when I decided to set my alarm to be a song that was the same as my ringtone. I then rolled over and passed out almost immediately. Most likely around 7:50 p.m.

I thought I had been asleep for a while when I heard the distinct haunting tune of what I thought was my alarm. Thinking It was the normal time to get up, 6:26 a.m., I rolled over and picked up the phone. In the process my finger bumped the power button, I then stared at the screen, my out-of-focus eyes struggling to read the time. When I could finally read it I was horrified: 8:45!

I thought it was 8:45 a.m. Bellowing a string of curses, I dropped the phone hard onto the shelf next to my bed and leapt out of bed tripping on the covers and nearly face planting as I did.

I then slammed my hand into the button that controlled the light in my bedroom. With a fury I then nearly sprinted into the bathroom and began putting on deodorant and brushing my teeth like a madman

Upon finishing in the bathroom I then began to get dressed ripping a shirt off of my clothes desk like a bear catching a fish in a stream, throwing it over my head and began to shove my pants on when I paused for a moment.

The radio was on in the background and it was playing music. They never play music at that time during the weekday. It’s always the ”Free Beer and Hot Wings”  I then sat down on my bed and looked at my phone yet again and realized my error. My alarm never went off. My dad had called a short time ago and when I pressed the button on my phone it canceled the call.

So, yes, boys and girls, learn from my lesson, pick different songs for your ringtones and alarms.
