(Abby Haywood/The Collegiate).

The Collegiate is branching out to include more art and illustration in our reporting and storytelling with the help of a new recruit. Abby Haywood, a dual-enrolled student from East Kentwood High School, will be a contributing artist for the summer semester. While studying a variety of comics, illustration and editorial cartoons, Haywood will be exploring the vast spectrum of visual journalism that spans from informative to entertaining.

Keep an eye on this space to see a variety of new creative work from Haywood and the rest of the team. Have a visual story idea for us? Email it to collegiate@grcc.edu.

Below are a few pieces Haywood has designed.

Haywood’s take on the “Where is Waldo?” cartoon with a vacant shot of the downtown scene in Grand Rapids as COVID-19 continues to keep the state on a stay-at-home order (Abby Haywood/The Collegiate).
Artwork designed for the sixth installment of Seen and Heard, published on May 16 (Abby Haywood/The Collegiate).
A column header designed for night Light by Jamie Miller, a culmination of reviews and opinions from a night owl (Abby Haywood/The Collegiate).
