Hey guys! Welcome to the very first installment of Five Questions and a Sketch, a new weekly series where I interview and draw interesting members of the GRCC campus and surrounding community. I’ll be kicking off this series by introducing The Collegiate staff starting with yours truly, so you have an idea of who makes up The Collegiate this semester. I’m a 16-year-old dual-enrolled student from East Kentwood High School trying my best to knock out some classes now and hopefully avoid overwhelming college debt in the future. I’m going into my second semester as the illustrator here at The Collegiate. Hopefully you will enjoy my work!

Why did you join The Collegiate?

My mom has worked as the advisor for The Collegiate since I was in elementary school so I’ve basically grown up around The Collegiate. When she held weekly meetings with her students during the summer me and my little sister would set up in the office connected to her classroom. We would hide under her desk and watch Minecraft videos and draw pictures. I guess it was inevitable that I would end up drawing for the publication.

What are you looking forward to this semester?

I’m looking forward to covering this year’s election. I have a feeling that it’s going to be pretty dramatic and would probably make for some good material.

What is your dream job?

I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do professionally but I know I want it to be something art-related. There are just so many artistic jobs… But, I really want to make my own graphic novels and work on a movie when I’m older!!

What is your favorite movie?

Oh man, it’s super hard to pick just one… my favorites are probably “Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse” and “WALL-E.” I watched “WALL-E” all the time as a little kid and I fell in love with the Spider-man movie as soon as I saw it at the theater. If you haven’t noticed, I have a soft spot for animated movies.

What inspires you?

A lot of different media inspires my art, basically anything I think looks cool influences what I make. Some notable examples are “Scott Pilgrim” and “Sailor Moon.”

Have suggestions about who I should feature next? Drop me a tip at 5questionsandasketch@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you!
