Once rooted in the commemoration of motherhood, Mother’s Day has somehow slowly evolved into a commercialized event over the past 100 years. On Sunday, May 9 you and your family can easily step away from this commercialized tradition and avoid the in-person church service, long line of maskless families waiting for their Mother’s Day brunch at those trendy chain restaurants, and giving of pro-landfill gifts. Instead, try something new that supports local businesses and has more of an eco-friendly approach. Show some love for our Grand Rapids Mothers by celebrating Mother’s Day with a Mother-Energy Brunch Bundle from Grand Rapids South East Market.
Unlike any grocery store in town, the South East Market has sustainable, equitable, and nutritious whole foods, and supports an underserved neighborhood while advocating for business owners who have not historically had their fair shake. South East Market utilizes priority vendors, sometimes referred to as B.I.P.O.C., Black, Brown, Indigenous, and people of color owned businesses, woman-led farms & organizations, and local products.
Decolonizing as food justice, Grand Rapids South East Market has been open to the public for nearly four months and has one amazing mission, “to increase access to health and culturally appropriate food to our community through a sustainable and equitable lens,” said Alita Kelly, co-founder of South East Market and recent UM graduate Environmental Science and Sustainable Business, from a winter 2021 public broadcast.
In a recent post, co-founder Khara DeWit said, “Mother’s Day isn’t easy for many. The days leading up to it evokes space for tender stories that need more space and time to tend to. Mother energy – nurturing and compassionate care – goes beyond femininity and biology. It’s the gentle side of the Divine that I’m falling deeper in love with every day, too. We need more of this energy in our world, yes? So, would you join us in honoring those who have mothered us? Go beyond the boundaries this holiday usually holds. Reach out and gift to someone you see holding mother energy in our life. Help support our Black and Asian owned businesses and by extension these other local businesses. And proceeds go directly to gifting these brunch bundles to the Mamas of De La Flor Midwifery right here in GR.”
The brunch bundle is $60 and includes a Farm Kitchen meal, either a quiche or frittata, asparagus and goat cheese or ham and mushroom, Luxe artisan preserves with choice of blackberry, basil, and brandy preserves or blueberry, lemongrass, and sage preserves, a Field & Fire Bakery brioche pan loaf, Littlefoot Coffee Roasters’ Wild Trilliums, or Golden Hour Farm Morning Tea Blend, Hyssop Florals small or medium market bouquet, along with fresh Cara Cara oranges, 12 oz. bottle of Malamazing Juice Co.’s GLOW, and a card explaining the reverberating of the proceeds. Order online before 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, and utilize South East Market’s curbside pickup or 49507 delivery service.
However you choose to celebrate, show love, kindness, and appreciation for yourself, others, and our Earth. Be safe and honor this Mother’s Day!
