Late night stabbing on GRCC’s Downtown Campus provokes public safety advisory

By Elizabeth Halvorson

An unidentified person was stabbed near the Grand Rapids Community College Library around midnight on Friday, Jan. 28. The victim is not a current student at GRCC and the campus was not open at the time of the incident.

The Grand Rapids Police Department arrived at Spectrum Hospital where the victim refused to give details of the incident or speak with any officers. Anyone with any information about this event should call the Grand Rapids Police Department at (616) 456-3403 or silent observer at (616) 774-2345.

GRCC Police would like to remind everyone on campus to avoid walking alone at night and to always be aware of your surroundings. It’s a good idea to save the GRCC Police number, (616) 234-4911, to your personal device and be aware there are several Emergency Call Boxes located throughout campus.

“I want to remind students, faculty, and visitors that the GRCC Police has the Safe Walk program to ensure no one walks alone at night,” said GRCC Police Chief Rebecca Whitman.

Students can contact campus police by dialing (616) 234-4010 or 4911 from any campus phone and should dial 911 if the campus police office is closed.
