The Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team defeated Kellogg Community College in a rout, 59-34, as they continued their climb towards first place in the conference.
Following a recent trend, the Raiders took control of the paint in dominating fashion. Outrebounding the Bruins 63-40, with every player recording a rebound. They netted 24 second chance points on 26 offensive rebounds.
Freshman guard Sally Merrill tallied her second double-double in a row, scoring 12 points with 12 rebounds and two blocks. Freshman guard Emersyn Koepke scored eight points, eight rebounds and three steals, with freshman forward Karissa Ferry adding eight points, nine rebounds, a steal and a block.
After a fairly even first quarter, GRCC’s defense took control of the game, holding the Bruins to eight points or less in each of the final three quarters.
After a disappointing 1-5 start, this blowout win keeps the Raiders on course as they angle for the number one spot in the conference. They currently sit at 15-8 overall and 11-2 in conference play.
With the top four spots in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association West in a near deadlock, GRCC needs a few more solid wins and a bit of good fortune to come out on top.
The Raiders take the road to face the No. 3 Muskegon Community College Jayhawks on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
