The Grand Rapids Community College Volleyball team continued their dominant play and extended their winning streak to 18 games, by defeating Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Thursday, Oct 13.
The game was played at Calvin University because GRCC was hosting a transfer fair at the Ford Fieldhouse.
“It’s always nice to play teams who we used to be in the conference with for so many years,” said head coach Chip Will. “It was a great night of volleyball in a very nice facility against another great volleyball team.”
After only hitting .177 in Tuesday’s match, the Raiders hit a .241 which led them to a 27-25, 25-14, 25-14 victory.
Sophomore Audrey Torres led the team with 15 kills and hit a match-high .414, while sophomore Kara Hecht added nine kills and seven digs.
Shannon Russell, a true sophomore, had twelve serve attempts that led to one ace and redshirt sophomore Audrey Gower had 13 serve attempts along with 13 digs.
The Raiders improve to 18-2 on the year riding their 18-game winning streak into next week. Although the team still has a tough journey ahead of them, Will is confident that the team will be prepared for the two big tournaments coming up.
“I think this team has stayed really focused on getting better each day, getting better on each set of volleyball,” coach Will said. I’m so proud of our focus to not drop a set in a very long time. Each player on this team does a great job of contributing to the overall team goals.”
GRCC volleyball will strive for another win in their second-to-last regular season game when they face Muskegon Community College, Thursday, Oct 27, at the Ford Fieldhouse at 6:30 p.m. The team looks to extend their winning streak to 19 games and stay hot heading into the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Volleyball Tournament.
