It was the final game of the season for the Grand Rapids Community College women’s soccer team demolished Lakeland Community College, 2-0.
It was clear from the start that the battle was one-sided with the Raiders supporting each other on the sideline and in the game, as every single player on the team was able to play.
Despite the victory, giving the Raiders a 8-11 record for the season, they did not qualify for the playoffs as they struggled on the road and in conference play.
Even knowing that the team didn’t qualify, the Raiders came to play as Abby Buttermore, a sophomore forward from Lowell, scored her 22nd goal of the season thanks to an assist from Kendyl Bjorkman, a freshman defender from Sparta.
Not long after that, Rylie Bjorkman, a freshman forward from Sparta, scored her second goal of the season off a cross pass assist from Claira Deyoung, a freshman forward from Jenison to make it a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Going into the second half, it was about keeping the lead and allowing players some playing time.
No goals were scored and the Raiders kept up the defensive momentum as they didn’t allow any shots in the first half, while only allowing two in the second to secure the victory.
GRCC’s head coach Jason Hill said he was very proud of his team’s victory.
“I’m very proud of them today,” Hill said. “Got to play everybody and we kept them out of the net and we were able to find the back of their goal twice, I thought it was a good performance.”
The inaugural season for the women’s soccer program at GRCC has officially concluded as they look to build the momentum for next year.
