The Michigan State Legislature has just approved a budget bill that will help Grand Rapids Community College completely renovate the Learning Resource Center.
The budget bill grants GRCC $16.8 million in funding to put toward the project, and was approved by lawmakers on Nov. 2 as a part of a $615 million budget. The bill is now awaiting the signature of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
The state funding will go toward reconfiguring interior spaces, addressing accessibility issues, and adding more room for student services. It will also go toward updating basic utilities, such as electrical and plumbing systems.
“We anticipate that we’ll be able to start that project sometime during 2025, most likely the in the summer,” said GRCC President Charles. “There is a great opportunity to update our facilities and provide 21-century support to our students for success.”
The 61,268-square-foot Resource Center on 140 Ransom Ave. NE, was built in 1972 and is home to the campus library, tutoring and academic support services, media services, and the Office for Diversity and Inclusion.
The $16.8 million capital outlay covers exactly half of the expected $33.6 million necessary to complete the entire renovation project.
“We are grateful that state lawmakers recognize the importance of this project,” Lepper said. “The renovations will create a sense of belonging for our students and make it easier for them to access the resources they need to support their learning.”
