January is National Blood Donor Month and the Democrats of Grand Rapids Community College have partnered with Versiti Blood Center of West Michigan to host a blood drive on Mon. Jan 22 to support the cause.
From 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., students can come to the Applied Technology Center and donate blood to those in need via walk-in or appointment.
According to the Red Cross, blood donations can help the lives of many, including those suffering from cancer, sickle cell, chronic diseases and many others.
The University of Colombia Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) says that donating blood can be beneficial for the donor, too.
One listed benefit is that donating blood essentially acts as a mini health screening. Prior to donating, your vitals are checked to make sure you meet the health requirements for donation. This process helps illuminate things that could otherwise go undetected, such as an infectious disease or high blood pressure.
The CUIMC also stated that people who donate blood regularly tend to have lower blood pressure and a lower risk of a heart attack.
Those who donate will receive a $10 e-gift card as a thank you. If you plan to donate, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water and eat beforehand.
The Collegiate reached out to the Democrats of GRCC via email but they could not be reached.
