On Saturday Jan. 6, the Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team played Southwestern Michigan College in a 81-30 blowout loss.

GRCC (3-7) got off to a sluggish start as the Raiders only scored three points in a 28-3 rout by SWMC in the first half. The Roadrunners continued to play physical in the second half as they closed the second quarter on a 24-12 run.

GRCC trailed 52-15 at halftime. The Roadrunners (13-1) ended the first half with 12 fastbreak points to the Raiders’ zero. SWMC also dominated the half 34-6 in points in the paint, 8-0 in bench points, 21-4 in points off turnovers, and 12-2 in second chance points.

Things got better for GRCC defensively in the second half as the Raiders held the Roadrunners to only 16 points in the third quarter. GRCC closed the game only scoring 15 points as SWMC continued their dominance in the 81-30 final.

GRCC sophomore guard Avery Jirous led the team with 15 points, three steals, 20 turnovers, and two assists.

Freshman forward Ava Schultz led the team with 13 rebounds and two blocks.

Freshman forward Sophia Modderman led the team with four personal fouls.

Coach David Glazier, who is in his eighth year as head coach, had this to say about his team’s performance, “…I mean, a little rusty. … We are undermanned right now. The kids are playing hard, I think, effort-wise. I can’t question that. We just have to be better at the little things.”

When asked what he wants his team to focus on before the next matchup, Glazier said, “I think we need to focus on trying to limit mistakes, learn from the ones that we made, just try to, not continue to do the thing that’s of 1 of 9 ratio (referencing GRCC’s point scoring percentage and performance in the game). “We’re focused on those, we’ll watch film on it. We’ll just continue to work.”

GRCC will face the Lansing Community College Stars on Wed, Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Gannon Gymnasium on the LCC campus in Lansing.
