The Black Africana Student Union (BASU) will be hosting its first Black History Month, Social Hour, which will aim to connect Grand Rapids Community College’s best Black leaders and highlight future events at GRCC while a panel discusses different life challenges and how to gain wisdom and knowledge. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 6.
“Students should expect this to be a time to be informed of multiple fun events going on from different student organizations on campus while also getting to pick the brains of some of the best Black Leaders here at GRCC,” BASU spokesperson Tyrell Jackson said.
There will also be light refreshments including coffee and hot cocoa along with cookies.
BASU plans on asking some questions as students arrive at the event in order to encourage early conversation and connection according to Jackson.
“I’m planning on having some questions presented when people arrive to encourage socializing,” Jackson said. “Also there will be a chance for students to ask the panel questions that other students may have.”
Jackson also previewed what the panel-discussion board will be conversing about.
“The panel’s purpose is to spread awareness of some reality’s of being a first-generation college student, share what it means to be authentic, and how to navigate code-switching,” Jackson said. “In a nut-shell, providing different perspectives and wisdom gained through real-life experience and time.”
Jackson wants students to know that this event will have a sense of inclusion and all students are welcome to attend.
“This event is open to all people,” Jackson said. “Through this event and the others this month, I want to use these events as an opportunity to let people know that BASU isn’t only for Black people, rather for every student looking for a team and support system here on campus.”
The Social Hour event will be from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at the Applied Technology Center (ATC Building) on the first floor in Lyon Room 120.
