If you want change, you better be willing to pay for it with votes

A column straight from the unorthodox mind of Jamie Miller. Often written during the middle of the night, Miller provides reviews of TV shows and movies, books, and details life through from his perspective (artwork by Abby Haywood/The Collegiate).

Change is kind of a funny word if you think about it. I mean it can relate to pocket change, literal coins you carry around in your pocket that jingles as you walk down a hallway which in my case at least makes me sound like some kind of jingling Tasmanian devil. But the other more powerful definition of the word, of course, refers to progress, to making things different sometimes for the worse but sometimes for the better. However, I sometimes struggle to tell which one is occurring.

Let’s go over the facts, shall we? It is looking more and more like it’s going to be Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden for the presidency yet again, a rematch that if I am being honest gives me pretty bad anxiety. You’ve got Biden who, though I respect him, he’s 81 years old and I fear he could experience health issues that could affect his leadership as a whole. And then you have Trump, 77, who, in my opinion, is at best unbalanced and selfish and at worst completely insane and unhinged and a possible threat to the country as a result.

I do not think the future of our country should be monopolized by its past. I mean between Biden and Trump, the Supreme Court and others the laws and rules that are being forged to guide and define my generation are being made by those who will not have to reckon with the results with little guidance from my generation. And then there is what’s happening in the world at large. Russia is still pouring into Ukraine hellbent on seizing it for itself. Israel and Hamas are bound and determined to wipe the other out. Israel is bombing away at Hamas targets with innocent civilians dying in the crossfire and Hamas has done despicable things I won’t detail in this article. Yet even these things which should be if not uniting our politicians, at the very least getting them to start talking with each other. They should be recognizing that something needs to be done before things get any worse. And yet no. That’s not happening. Rather the Republicans and the Democrats are as divided as ever. It appears that their thoughts are not for the sake of the world or even for the sake of the American people. They are instead getting tripped up by party lines and on their positions,  on their own petty grasps of power.

And this leads into the true purpose of this column, for I didn’t write it just to rant about politics or throw shade at any one political group, rather I intend this as a kind of call to action. A call to make our politicians listen. And if they won’t vote them out and replace them with people who will. You see at the end of the day, it’s not Biden, or Trump or the Supreme Court or any of them who have the power here. It’s us, the voters, we have the power. We can choose who takes office and who doesn’t. And if those in office don’t want to do their job, then maybe they shouldn’t have them. So I appeal to you, please for the love of all that is right please, please, please get out there and vote. After all, you have the power. Personally this November I’m voting for anyone not named Donald J Trump, more to that point I highly recommend anyone who feels the same vote in the primary as I plan to and with a huge spot of luck we may be able to stop him from making it to November’s ballot.
