The Collegiate is offering a free zine workshop for Grand Rapids Community College students on Monday, Feb. 19. At the workshop students will get an insight on what zines are and learn how to create a zine of their own.

Abby Haywood, a Collegiate staff illustrator and veteran zine maker, who is leading the workshop with her mom and Collegiate Adviser, Jennifer Ackerman-Haywood, said zines are accessible to everyone.

This workshop is a good chance to show your creativity through zines, and it’s beginner-friendly.

They are super easy and cheap to make,” Haywood said. “Some zines are short stories, some are comics, but there are no rules. If you want to make a zine that’s just pictures of your pet in funny outfits, you can do that.”

Although this is a one-time event, there are multiple ways to learn about and get more involved with zines.

“There are a bunch of resources locally and online,” Haywood said. “Some comic book shops in Grand Rapids like Vault of Midnight carry zines in their small press section. Grand Rapids Zine Fest is another cool option. It’s a local zine fest where you can buy, trade, and talk to cool people about zines.”

This zine workshop is a part of GRCC’s Campus Common Reading program and activities like this will not only give you a chance to be creative and show others your work, but also to take a break from school and work stress.

The zine workshop will be from 3-5 p.m. Monday, Feb 19. in The Collegiate office in Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall Room 314.
