Grand Rapids Community College’s Student Government hosted its second Town Hall of 2024, where they proposed three options for their Student Game Room project. This project includes board games, an area to play video games, and a common meeting area for students to hang out.
“We’ve been in contact with Victoria Janowiak as well as other members of Student Life about the designs,” Vice President of Student Government Michael Zazzo said. “We’ve been working on this idea for a while now and now we have three blueprint options.”
The first option for the Student Game Room, which is Student Government’s favorite design, would be located at the Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall G2 level near its entrance door. This option would be isolated beside the management office. It is a much larger space than the other option, while being the furthest away from Subway.
Option two would be closer to the food options including Subway, in the G2 level inside Winchester Alley. This option would be directly near the Subway which would also include cafeteria tables.
The last option would be similar to option two but further away from the Subway. Located in the Winchester Alley, this is a more centralized option at the G2 level. The main concern with this option is the board games being taken into the cafeteria.
Prior to discussing the Student Game Room, the Town Hall started off with a reminder of how their proposal to even out the Campus Activities Fee (CAF) to $10. At the moment, part-time students have to pay $5 for the CAF while full-time students have to pay $10. With this proposal, the fee would be $10 regardless if a student is part-time or full-time. The Student Government is looking to rename the fee to the Student Activity Fee to “more accurately reflect how that money is used.” The decision will be finalized by the Board of Trustees sometime in March.
“We have our proposal finalized and now we are awaiting a decision from the Board of Trustees,” President of Student Government Alex Miranda said. “We proposed an equalization of the Campus Activities Fee to $10 for all students.”
The Student Leadership Awards were announced during the meeting, as leaders from different student groups on campus will be invited to participate on Thursday, March. 21 from 5-8 p.m. at Secchia Piazza. Student leaders around campus can be nominated through the forms tab on Raider Connect and nominations close Feb. 29.
Every two years, GRCC sends out the Ruffalo Noel Levitz Student Satisfaction Survey which looks to gauge student input on their college experience. The survey is open for students to take via email until Friday, Feb. 23.
Lastly, the Student Government accepted two allocation requests for the Fitness Club. The first allocation, a total of $171, is for the Cat Yoga Event on Wednesday, March 13 from 2-4 p.m. at the Ford Fieldhouse. The Fitness Club’s second allocation that was accepted was a total of $220 for Field Day on Wednesday, April 17 from 12-3 p.m. at the Ford Fieldhouse. More information will be posted soon on Raider Connect.
Following the approval of the allocation requests, Student Government currently has $10,574.33 remaining in the budget.
The next Town Hall meeting for Student Government will be Monday, March.11 from 12-2 p.m. including an appearance from GRCC President Charles Lepper.
