On Thursday, March 21, Grand Rapids Community College Music will be hosting the 2024 Winter Student Honors Recital. This recital is held twice a year by the GRCC Music Program, once in the fall and once in the winter, and aims to highlight some of GRCC’s top music students.

“This is an opportunity for the music faculty to recommend (nominate) students who are achieving higher goals, and also for those who are showing a lot of improvement,” said Professor Kevin Dobreff, the Department Head and Program Director of music at GRCC. “So this gives us an opportunity to acknowledge those students, give them an opportunity to perform in front of their peers, faculty, and family.”

This semester’s recital will feature three guitarists, two singers, a solo pianist, two flute players and a string trio that consists of two violins and a viola. Nearly all of these performances will be solos, with the flute and vocal soloists having a piano accompaniment in the background, and the string trio will be playing altogether. The performances will feature some pieces from Mozart and Mendleson, as well as a mix of many other composers from the 17th-20th centuries, with two of these being composed by living composers.

“I think it’s always important for students to have the opportunity for students to support each other,” Dobreff said. “So this is a great opportunity, especially if students outside of music would like to get more familiar with what we do here, it’s a nice opportunity to come in, see the space, and attend a concert for free.”

Admission is free and no ticket is required at the door. It is recommended to show up a few minutes early, as it is hard to get into the concert hall during a performance. The recital hall has 104 seats, if there is overflow, guests are welcome to sit on the floor as well.

The recital will be held on the second floor of the Albert P. Smith Music Center in the Linn Maxwell Keller Recital Hall from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. This event is open to the GRCC campus community and the general public.
