If you are a student who loves to share and support others’ creative work that could inspire you and make you feel a sense of belonging, we have an event for you.

As part of the Grand Rapids Community College Campus Common Reading, students are hosting an Open Mic Social on March 14 from 3-4:30 p.m. at the GRCC Library & Learning Commons center. This event will allow students to share their writing and art.

This event gives students an opportunity to get experience presenting their work in front of an audience.

Sophia Brewer is an associate professor on the library staff who has been working with students to plan the event.

”We are going to be providing a safe environment for students to express their creativity,” Brewer stated in an email to The Collegiate. “ It’s meant to give students a voice, promote mental health and self-expression.”

Brewer stated the event is intended to “Promote creative expression. (Encourage) students to explore and express their thoughts, ideas, and emotions through writing and other humanities-based activities. Foster a sense of belonging. Create an inclusive, welcoming, and safe environment where students from diverse backgrounds can come together to share their stories, talents, and creative expressions.”

This event is open to all students and students who sign up to perform will receive a prize.
