
On Tuesday, April 23, the Grand Rapids Community College baseball team shut out non-divisional opponent Kellogg Community College, 1-0 in seven innings at Belknap Park.
Going into the game, the Bruins were the 17th ranked team in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division 2 Poll
In GRCC’s last matchup win against Alpena, the Raiders secured a playoff berth within the NJCAA eight-team regional tournament. The Raiders are currently ranked first in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Northern Division standings with a record of 28-10, 16-0 in the conference.
GRCC scored only one run in this game, coming from freshman shortstop Chad Fisher Jr. who, in the first inning, grounded out to shortstop allowing sophomore center fielder Trevin Laming to score, 1-0 Raiders.
With very little scoring in this matchup, the pitching was the main event, especially for the Raiders’ pitching staff.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Walker Brockie improved to 3-1 on the season with the win. He pitched six innings and threw 10 strikeouts. He allowed no runs on two hits and three walks.
In the seventh inning, freshman right-handed pitcher Logan VanSurksum came into the game in relief for Brockie, securing his second save this season. He pitched one inning and threw two strikeouts. He allowed no runs on no hits and had no walks given up.
Up next, the Raiders take on the Lakers of Mid Michigan College in a doubleheader four-game series.
GRCC will play the first two games of the series at home at noon and 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 at Belknap Park.
GRCC will then travel to Shepherd on Sunday, April 28 to finish up the last two games of the series. The first game will start at 1 p.m. and the second game will start at 3:30 p.m.
