On Monday, April 15, Grand Rapids Community College Police were dispatched to the Ford Fieldhouse after they were advised that a man in the gym was having a seizure.

According to the police report, GRCC police officers entered the fieldhouse as officers from the Grand Rapids Fire Department were also rushing into the building. Once in the gym, responding officers saw a man lying on the ground with (automated external defibrillator) pads on his chest. The man was conscious and attempted to sit up but was instructed to lay back down because he had just recovered from collapsing during a basketball game and needed to be revived with the A.E.D.

When the man lost consciousness during the game, a GRCC employee immediately ran to retrieve the A.E.D. that was located on the wall outside of the gym and hooked it to the man to do an evaluation. After a shock was delivered, the device advised to start CPR and the employee did so. Around five cycles of 30 compressions were performed with two breaths between each one. The employee believed he stopped breathing around the second or third cycle and regained consciousness after the fifth.

The man regained consciousness right before the fire department arrived with an AMR ambulance arriving afterwards. After hooking him up to a heart monitor, he was loaded onto a stretcher and transported via ambulance to a local hospital.

Before he was transported, the man was able to explain that he started to feel faint while playing basketball and the next thing he remembered was waking up on the ground. The employee stated that she was doing ok but decided to take the rest of the day off and go home.

GRCC Police got replacement pads for the A.E.D., connected them to the device, tested them and returned them to the case.
