The AI Incubator at Grand Rapids Community College is hosting three informational sessions on July 25 in the Calkins Science Center on GRCC’s Main Campus in room 131. The staff and faculty session is scheduled for 9 a.m, followed by the general public session at noon and student session at 2 p.m.

Jonnathan Resendiz, the faculty director of the AI Incubator, said this is the first of multiple sessions they have planned for this year.

“It is going to be a recurring event,” Resendiz said. “This is just one of many.”

Attendees will learn how to use the technology and experience a variety of different topics regarding AI. Resendiz explained the topics will change with each session to keep up with the changing of the technology and each topic being taught is subject to change based on what the attendees desire.

“In general, what people can expect from this particular one or any of the sessions we have would be hands-on usage of AI and trends that are happening in the AI space,” he said.

This first session will include either information on what large language models (LLM’s) are, how to create effective prompts to receive desired results or how to build custom generative pre-trained transformers (GPT’s). This depends on what most people there would like to learn.

With AI becoming more accessible to students, some may be engaging in unethical usage. With cheating becoming a concern, Resendiz suggests students refer to GRCC’s honesty policy when using AI for coursework.

He also stated that students may benefit from these workshops because it will help them better understand where AI can be an appropriate tool to help aid education.

“Once they understand how the technology works, then they have a better ability to not cross that line between cheating and not cheating,” Resendiz said.

In order to attend the event, you must RSVP depending on which session you would like to go to at the following links: Staff, General Public and Students.

Sessions are being limited to 15 people in person at the AI Incubator with additional spots available online via Zoom.
