The 15th ArtPrize competition will continue through Sept. 28 in various locations in the downtown area, including on Grand Rapids Community College’s campus.
Nick Antonakis, the head of the art department at GRCC, says ArtPrize is a great time for students to learn more about the art world.
“If they are art students they need to explore as much artwork as possible and be inspired by other artists,” Antonakis stated in an email to the Collegiate. “For non-art students this is an excellent opportunity to see the concepts and ideas the artists express.”
This year two faculty members from GRCC will be participating among more than 950 artists. Art and design professor Matthew Schenk and assistant visual arts professor Andrew Caldwell will show in the competition.
Grants and scholarships will be awarded to winning participants. Anyone older than 13-years-old that attends the event can vote for their favorite pieces. Voting will be open throughout the event and can be done either through the ArtPrize mobile app or by scanning the QR code linked with the art.
Six ArtPrize entries are displayed at GRCC in the Paul Collins Art Gallery located on the fourth floor of Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall.
“As an institution that values the arts we feel that it is important for our community and students to enjoy this event on our campus and all around the Grand Rapids venues across town,” Antonakis stated.
