Students at Grand Rapids Community College received an email on Jan. 9 stating that the construction at the intersection of Lyon Street and Division Avenue will be completed by Jan. 10 or 13, depending on the status of the concrete curing. The email also mentioned that once finished traffic will return to a one-way flow on Lyon and Fountain streets after temporarily being two-way.
The restoration of one-way traffic on Lyon and Division will be short-term, with a shift back to two-way traffic expected this spring.
Grand Rapids city officials couldn’t be reached for comment about this change, which has the potential to cause congestion for students who drive to campus as well as those who take the bus and observe traffic flow from the bus stop on Fountain Street.
GRCC student Ariyonna France, 18, of Grand Rapids, anticipates the change in traffic to cause confusion.
“One way? I think they should keep it the same, doing too much is going to confuse everyone and make a mess downtown,” said France, who commutes to campus on The Rapid bus.
