Stand Out is bringing back its annual Snow Shimmer celebration this week with crafts, queer music, and a giant IKEA shark up for grabs
As this semester wraps up its chaotic final stretch, Stand Out is stepping in with the perfect reason to take a break: the club’s annual holiday party is back this Thursday, Dec. 4, and everyone on campus is invited, members and allies alike.
Stand Out, known for providing an open and affirming space for LGBTQ+ students and allies, usually meets every Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. this semester in ATC, room 219. The club focuses on building community, offering support, and giving students a space to unwind. But their holiday party is one of their biggest traditions, and the president says that they’re excited to bring the tradition back for another year.
“Every year Standout tries to host a holiday party, so we are happy to bring it back! We are hoping the event can be a chance for students to relax after a semester of hard work and to celebrate the holiday season,” said Stand Out President Jen Abbass. “Anyone is welcome to join, students don’t need to be a part of Stand Out.”
The party runs Thursday, Dec. 4, from 5-7:30 pm. in RJF 108/109, and it’s completely free.
There will also be free food. Standout is planning snacks, pizza, non-alcoholic drinks, and (fingers crossed) hot chocolate.
They will also be handing out free pronoun pins for anyone who wants one.
If you’re into crafts, the event has you covered, too. There’ll be cookie decorating and ornament decorating stations, perfect for making something cute before heading into finals season. Queer music will also be playing to keep the vibe fun and warm.
One of the biggest draws, however, might be the raffle. The prize is none other than the iconic giant IKEA shark plush. The event will also feature a white elephant exchange with a $15 limit, so anyone who wants to participate should bring a wrapped gift and be prepared to trade, steal, and laugh.
Beyond the food and activities, the party is really about giving students a space to breathe. With finals creeping up and the semester coming to an end, the chance to relax with friends (or make new ones) couldn’t come at a better time.
Whether you’re showing up for the crafts, the snacks, the vibes, or the legendary shark, Stand Out’s holiday party promises a cozy, low stress, way to end the semester. So grab a gift (if you want), bring your friends, and swing by RJF 108/109 on Thursday evening for a chill way to celebrate the season, and maybe even go home with a giant stuffed shark.
