The Grand Rapids Community College Communications Department announced the Otter as the college’s new mascot at the opening day ceremony held this morning for staff and faculty members.

Voting for the new mascot began on Sep. 29, when members of the GRCC community were asked to choose between a lion, fox, and otter. According to an unofficial tally done by Collegiate staff in October., the otter was the most popular, followed by the lion in second, and the fox in third.

Otters are, “curious, clever and quick, just like GRCC students. They adapt to change, face challenges with grit and explore new paths with a playful and determined spirit.”

Merchandise with the new mascot has already been designed and teased on GRCC’s social media accounts, with an Instagram post from Dec. 16 with the caption “New swag coming soon…🐾,” alongside two students wearing T-Shirts with blurring over the design.
