Grand Rapids Community College women’s and men’s basketball teams are welcoming food donations for the annual “Hunger Games” doubleheader tonight against Lake Michigan College.

The Michigan Community College Athletics Association runs an annual initiative every basketball season called the “Hunger Games” where they encourage food to be donated and then give all proceeds to a local food pantry. Each MCCAA school hosts one “Hunger Games” night each season in an effort to raise the most food to give back to their communities.

Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to get a discount on admissions into tonight’s games. Each donated item earns $1 off of admissions, up to a maximum of $5.

The men’s team is currently tied for first place in the conference with a (6-2) record in league play, while the women remain in second place in the conference (6-1), coming off a victory Wednesday night.

GRCC donations will go directly to the food pantry on campus. Students get free admissions to the games with student ID, and if they bring a donation they get a free popcorn. The women’s game will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s at 7:30 p.m. at the Ford Fieldhouse.
