Today, Oct. 7, the power was out at both the main and DeVos Campuses at Grand Rapids Community College from approximately 7:30 to 9 a.m. This outage led to all morning classes before 11 a.m. being canceled.
This power outage was due to a Consumers Energy outage affecting downtown Grand Rapids.
Lyndise Post, Executive Director of Marketing & Communications at GRCC, confirmed this information in a statement via email.
GRCC experienced a power outage Wednesday morning as part of a larger Consumers Energy outage affecting downtown Grand Rapids. Power was restored to campus by 9 a.m., and the college resumed normal operations,” the statement read.
Consumers Energy stated that the outage was caused by a raccoon affecting the downtown substation.
Additionally to GRCC, Kendall College of Art and Design was also impacted by the outage, along with 200 businesses and homes spanning from Lyon Street to Wealthy Street.
Classes resumed on campus at 11 a.m.
