Approximately 2,500 fans packed Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids last night to watch the Team USA defeat Japan in a 5-2 game.
The US led 4-0 after scoring four unanswered goals in the first 16 minutes of play, including three from captain Carli Lloyd. Lloyd’s hat trick was the second of her career and the earliest hat trick in World Cup history.
When veteran Abby Wambach entered the game late in the second half, Lloyd removed her captain’s armband and gave it to Wambach in honor of her service to Team USA.
The event at Rosa Parks Circle was sponsored by Downtown GR and Fox 17 and featured plenty of patriotism spilling over from the Independence Day festivities a day earlier.
