Destiny Adams, 29, never would have imagined being on national news. That is one thing about Adams, she constantly puts herself out there and isn’t afraid to be herself.
“I never would’ve believed that I would end up being a business owner, serving in the Army, let alone being on TV talking about my finances,” Adams said.
In September, Adams decided to reach out to the CNBC show “Millenial Money”, through Instagram. She had been watching the series about millennials who are able to make the most bang for their buck. She decided that she might as well direct message the Instagram account, telling them her story and how she could be a good candidate for an upcoming episode. Surprisingly, a couple of days later the station reached out asking if they could feature her in an upcoming episode.
“I had to send proof of everything, I had to send W-2’s, bank statements, and after that got verified I had two more interviews,” she said. “Then they started filming. They had two camera guys and lights. I liked the experience.”
Having multiple careers and passions requires dedication, hard work and organization – principles that Adams attributes partly to her service in the National Guard. She joined when she was interning at East Kentwood High School for her criminal justice major. The idea of getting help with college, service and adventure motivated Adams to make a leap of faith and join the guard.
“Now I am very disciplined,” Adams said. “I have a lot of patience. When things get stressful I am able to stay calm. Through the Army, I learned not to be panicked when the unexpected happens.”
Although Adams had an enthusiasm for criminal justice she decided to ultimately change her career to social work. Today she balances being a social worker and running her new start-up business called Destite Hair Selection. Adams’ business is centered around hair extensions, wigs, lashes, and more. As her business took off she started a beauty salon located at 2750 Birchcrest Dr. SE.
“When COVID hit, I started focusing on selling hair online,” Adams said. “I am working on transferring the salon to one of the stylists.”
In addition to working two jobs, Adams works on her YouTube Channel, which has over 20,000 subscribers. The channel focuses on one of her many passions which include starting a business.
“I am terrified of public speaking,” Adams said. “I wanted to get over my fear so I started my Youtube channel. I focused on what I love to talk about, which is business. I wanted to help people and share my journey.”
Adams embraced her struggles and found a way to turn speaking to others into a newfound passion. Her ambition to help others who may be starting a small business, motivated her to continue making videos and creating a stronger presence on social media.
“Take advantage of social media,” Adams said. “Make it your resume and be authentic. Don’t be scared to share your story. Your social media does not need to be perfect. You never know (where) putting yourself out there is going to take you.”
