On Saturday, Feb. 10, the Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team lost a close game to Bay College, 48-43 at the Ford Fieldhouse.
In the first quarter, the now 17-7 (9-0 in the conference) Norse jumped out to a seven-point lead with 7:32 to go. It was a 9-2 lead after a 3-point shot by BC sophomore guard Camryn Carver-Bonner. GRCC trailed the entire half and with 11 seconds to go, BC took their largest lead of the quarter and the game, a 14-point lead, putting them up 25-11. This huge lead came after a two-point shot by BC freshman forward Jayda Freudinger. In the quarter, GRCC was 4 for 19 (21.05%) on field goals, 1 for 5 (20%) from the 3-point line, and 2 for 2 (100%) from the free-throw line.
In the second quarter, the Norse continued their dominance and never trailed, but with 11 seconds to go in the quarter, the Raiders cut the Norse lead down to five as GRCC freshman guard Tia Richard made both of her free throws. The lead was 30-25 for the Norse at the end of the second quarter. In the quarter, GRCC was 5 for 12 (41.67%) on field goals, 1-5 (20%) from the 3-point line, and 3-5 (60%) from the free-throw line.
In the third quarter, with 9:38 to go, GRCC freshman forward Kaylie VanDerHulst cut the Norse lead to three, 30-27 after a 2-point shot. Unfortunately, this would be the only momentum GRCC would have in the quarter as freshman guard Leah Allan would put the Norse up six with 9:20 to go, a 33-27 lead. With 22 seconds to go in the quarter, freshman point guard Siena Lingle shot a 3-point shot to push the Norse to a nine-point lead and a 43-39 lead at the end of the quarter. In the quarter, GRCC was 4 for 17 (23.53%) on field goals, 0 for 6 (0%) from the 3-point line, and 1 for 2 (50%) from the free-throw line.
In the fourth quarter, with 6:34 to go, Lingle put the Norse up 10 over the Raiders with a two-point shot, putting the Norse up 45-35. It was desperation time in the fourth quarter as a two-point shot by GRCC sophomore guard Avery Jirous cut the Norse lead to 4 with 2:04 left in the game. Allan had the last laugh though as she put the Norse up by five points, making the first of her two three throws, giving the Norse a 48-43 lead. With seconds to go, Richard missed a three-point shot that would have put GRCC within two and a chance to tie the game after a possible foul and Norse free throws. Freundinger got the defensive rebound for the Norse though as GRCC fell 48-43. In the quarter, GRCC was 3 for 11 (27.27%) on field goals, 2 for 6 (33.33%) from the 3-point line, and 1 for 2 (50) from the free-throw line.
In total, GRCC freshman forward Sophia Modderman led the team with 10 rebounds. Richard led with 17 points, four takeaways and one block. Jirous led with four assists.
Up next, the now 7-13 (4-5 in the conference) Raiders will head on the road to face the Jayhawks of Muskegon Community College in a Valentine’s Day showdown on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
