On Thursday, Feb. 15, the Grand Rapids Community College Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion will host a free screening of “The Color Purple” at Celebration Cinema Studio Park in Grand Rapids.
Initially a book written by Alice Walker, “The Color Purple” is a musical remake of the first movie released in 1985. The new musical includes thought-provoking messages of determination in the face of race and gender challenges.
Seating for the screening is limited, so those interested are asked to register via Raider Connect.
Popcorn and drinks will be provided at this event.
This event is part of GRCC’s Black History Month programming.
In an email from the Interim Director of ODEI Jamillya Hardley, she explains that there are 3 Student engagement affinity spaces ODEI is revamping which are, NIA, B2B, and ALAS. With the movie depicting women’s struggles and empowerment, it would be appropriate for NIA to host this event.
“NIA, which is Swahili meaning Women with Purpose is a group led by GRCC staff and faculty who are working together to create this space where women-identifying, students of color can network, make connections, find mentorship, and learn to find their own voice,” Hardley continued. Although this is a NIA event, all are welcome to join the film screening.
This movie is one of multiple ways that ODEI plans to achieve a goal for this academic calendar which is to inform students and NIA, B2B, and ALAS. Hardley said, “The more students continue to find places where they are accepted for who they are, supported and provided with assistance while navigating college, and being represented, are all ways that contribute to student success and excellence.
