After more than a year of planning, the Arts Club at Grand Rapids Community College is moving forward with plans to paint a mural on campus.
Work on the long-awaited project is scheduled to begin July 17 and is expected to wrap up by Aug. 8. The mural will be located in the student center on GRCC’s main campus.
Spencer Caldwell, the founder of the Arts Club at GRCC, said he is very eager to see this plan be set into motion.
“It’s super exciting to see the Arts Club kind of finish one of the first goals that we put in place for it,” Caldwell said.
The club’s goal is to inspire students with the art they put around campus. They are hoping to give more life to campus through art and maybe even motivate students to take part in the creation of more murals.
“We’re planning more murals after this one, too,” Caldwell said. “My hope is that we do really well with this one, and I’m confident we will.”
There are five designs being considered for the mural, all of which were submitted by Arts Club members. Caldwell explained that the club specifically wanted the theme for the mural to be centered around diversity.
“We wanted the mural to depict the diversity of the student body at GRCC and how that’s our strength,” Caldwell said.
Each design depicts this theme in the artist’s own unique way. Voting for which design will be painted and is open until July 14.
