On Aug. 6, 2003, the iconic “Freaky Friday” remake hit theaters, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. Around 22 years later, on Aug. 8, 2025, the sequel to this beloved movie, “Freakier Friday,” was released.

The original film followed the story of Anna and Tess through Anna’s first major concert as a bass player and Tess getting remarried after the passing of her husband two years prior. These events cause a lot of anger and disagreements between the two main characters and their bodies are switched in order to understand each other and move forward.

The new film follows a similar plot line as Anna, now a mother, and Tess, now a grandmother, navigate the joining of their family with Anna’s fiance’s. Anna’s soon to be step-daughter, Lily, is not interested in being a part of Anna’s or her daughter, Harper’s, lives. At the same time, Harper struggles with the idea that Anna’s fiance, Eric, does not know enough about her mom or fully love her. In order for these problems to be resolved, Anna, Tess, Lily and Harper switch bodies.

“Freaky Friday” was released before I was born and I grew up watching it. It was a fun, funny and overall heartwarming film. It was— and still is—the kind of movie you could watch on a whim or when you were sick and still enjoy it. “Freakier Friday” does its predecessor justice in those departments.

It is fun, funny, heartwarming and a wonderfully easy watch. There are plenty of callbacks to the first movie, and all of the original cast at least make a cameo (including Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Ryan Malgarini and Christina Vidal). As far as sequels of iconic movies go, this film does pretty well holding its own.

It is not life-changing, you won’t categorize your life before and after watching it, and maybe it is a little stupid, but, man, it is fun. And, when did we stop letting movies simply be fun?

“Freakier Friday” brings all the same vibes as the original – the angsty teen years, the 2000s music, the miscommunication between mothers and daughters— and, you know, the idea of switching bodies to solve a problem. I also think it did a good job of sticking to the original idea of the first movie while also adding a new spin on the content.

The best part of the movie for me was seeing Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis work together again. Jamie Lee Curtis’ comedic timing is impeccable as always and Lindsay Lohan is able to muster more angst. Manny Jacinto, Sophia Hammons and Julia Butters also make great additions to the chaotic Coleman family. While the credits roll, there are numerous bloopers, which also fulfill the 2000s era aura.

For me, this movie was about a three and a half out of five stars movie. It wasn’t life-altering, but it was solid fun.

Freakier Friday” is now showing in theaters.
