The air in downtown Grand Rapids sparkled Saturday night, not just with autumn’s chill, but with an infectious amount of heartwarming joy.

From 5 p.m. until about 7 p.m., downtown Grand Rapids was transformed into a winter wonderland, all thanks to the spectacular annual Gentex Grand Rapids Santa Parade and Tree Lighting ceremony, organized by the Grand Rapids Jaycees.

Hundreds upon hundreds of spectators, ranging from bundled-up toddlers to cozy couples, lined the streets to witness the parade from Division Avenue along Pearl Street, and culminated at the heart of the celebration: Rosa Parks Circle.

The streets were not just crowded, they were alive. Downtown Grand Rapids hummed with anticipation and the cheerful sounds of the impending holiday season. Whether families choose to settle into a spot and watch the full parade or peel off early and partake in the delights at Rosa Parks Circle, there was no shortage of fun.

Rosa Parks Circle was the undisputed hub of holiday merriment. It offered a variety of Christmas cheer. Little ones eagerly lined up to send off their most earnest wishes at the Letters to Santa booth. Meanwhile, guests of all ages enjoyed the delights of free ice cream and steaming cups of hot chocolate, provided by the Salvation Army (and a fine selection of brews for the adults).

As the 6:30 p.m. tree lighting approached, Monroe Center became completely engulfed by the crowd. Booths offered delightful games, giving children the chance to win prizes they could proudly clutch as they watched the stage entertainment.

Taking the stage were acts that heightened the Christmas spirit, from a children’s group singing timeless carols, followed by the robust tunes played by the Salvation Army’s live band, to the actual stars of the night, contagiously adorable, decked-out corgis (yes, those stubby-legged, perpetually smiling pups). Dressed in their finest festival gear, they were a perfect embodiment of the event’s lighthearted spirit.

Suddenly, with all of the excitement, the moment had finally arrived: the tree lighting. As Santa Claus himself took center stage to greet all of the night’s guests, he rallied the entire crowd, leading everyone in a massive, unified countdown from 10. When everyone reached “one,” the magnificent 37-foot tree burst into thousands of sparkling, beautiful lights!

From the first float to the final dazzling flicker of our city’s magnificent Christmas tree, the Grand Rapids Santa Parade and Tree Lighting was a success. It was more than just an event; it was truly an enchanting experience, proving that downtown Grand Rapids knows exactly how to kick off the season of enjoyment for everyone.
