Grand Rapids Community College students looking for a break from assignments will have their chance this week at Boot Scootin’ Boogie. On Feb. 20, the Boot Scootin’ Boogie is being hosted by the Campus Activity Board (CAB) located at Secchia Piazza in the ATC from 7 -10 p.m.

Lacey Hendrie, president of CAB, stated that the primary goal of Boot Scootin’ Boogie is to give students a chance to bond and take a break.

“The goal is to provide students with a time to have fun and build a sense of community,” Hendrie said. “I hope they have a fun time and can take their mind off their responsibilities.”

Boot Scootin’ Boogie is a western-themed line dance. CAB intentionally chose to keep things fresh. Hendrie explained that the theme was selected as it offered something new compared to past CAB events.

“It is something you should try because you could have a lot of fun,” Hendrie said. “Even if you end up not liking it, you could try, and you don’t have to stay the whole time, but it is a good opportunity to meet new people, have fun, relieve stress, and build a sense of community.”

Planning for Boot Scootin’ Boogie began before winter break and required coordination with multiple vendors, securing contracts, and working with campus dining regarding food options. Additionally, CAB worked to advertise the event to students.

Hendrie encourages students to try to step out of their comfort zone.

Ultimately, Hendrie hopes students walk away feeling like they had a positive experience, or at least be proud of stepping out of their comfort zone by trying something new.

With music, themed activities, and a chance to connect with others, Boot Scootin’ Boogie aims to be more than just a party, but an opportunity for students to unwind and engage with campus life in a new way at GRCC.
