The Collegiate’s weekly brief: March 30 through April 4

There are a total of 17 events happening at Grand Rapids Community College in the week of March 7 through April 4, including but not limited to athletic games, bingo night, and various workshops. Read on to find out where to find free food and fun in the coming week:

Monday, March 30:

11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The Bob and Alecia Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs is hosting “Women’s History Month ‘Real Talk Panel’ Part 3 Sexism” in room 108 of Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall. The campus community is invited to celebrate and discuss womanhood in a safe environment with free snacks and swag bags. 

1 to 2 p.m. FutureTech Careers is having a “Resume Writing Workshop” as a part of their Career Conversations series. GRCC FutureTech Careers’ Job Developer, Consuelo White, will give a lecture discussing the basics of writing a resume and how to avoid common writing mistakes. Students can attend the discussion both in person and online in the Applied Technology Center Auditorium, room 168, or on Zoom. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required, and the lecture is open to the public.

4 and 6 p.m. GRCC baseball and softball teams will face Delta College in a doubleheader at Belknap Park. The games will be livestreamed on the GRCC Athletics YouTube channel. Admission is free for GRCC students and staff with a valid RaiderCard.

Tuesday, March 31:

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Center for Counseling and Well-Being is hosting “Say What? Handling Conflict Without Losing Your Cool” as part of its Well-Being Workshop series, sharing information on identifying triggers and communicating clearly in tough situations at the Raider Grill (room 205 of the Student Center). There will be free food and parking passes. 

4:30 to 5:30 p.m. “Writers at GRCC” will be meeting in room 275 of RJF Hall. Writers of GRCC is a student organization open to any students who want to meet with other student writers and discuss literary arts. 

4:30 to 6:30 p.m. “Stand Out” will host its weekly meeting in room 219 of the ATC. 

5 to 6 p.m. FutureTech Careers is hosting “Pathways to UX Design” as a part of their Career Conversations series. Digital Experience Manager at Corewell Health, Brittany Carlson, will be giving a lecture about User Experience Design, including her experience going from an intern to a digital experience manager. Students can attend the discussion both in person and online in the Applied Technology Center Auditorium, room 168, or on Zoom. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required, and the lecture is open to the public

Wednesday, April 1:

11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Center for Student Life & Leadership is having a “Student Org Succession Planning” workshop, inviting leaders from student organizations to learn best practices aiding in a seamless transition to the next school year. This workshop will be held in the Student Life Hub on the first floor of the Student Center. 

2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The Foreign Affairs Club is having its weekly meeting in room 206 of Sneden Hall at the Devos Campus. 

5 to 8 p.m. Campus Activities Board is having “Bingo Night” in room 234 of the Student Center. There will be over $100 worth in prizes for students to win, and free food. 

Thursday, April 2:

2 and 4 p.m. GRCC baseball and softball teams will face Bay College in a doubleheader at Belknap Park. The games will be livestreamed on the GRCC Athletics YouTube channel. Admission is free for GRCC students and staff with a valid RaiderCard.

5 to 7 p.m. The Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs will hold “Cinema & Conversation: Osama” in room 168 of the ATC. This 2003 critically acclaimed film takes place in Afghanistan under the Taliban Regime. The Taliban has closed down a hospital where a mother and a daughter work, leaving them jobless. Legally prohibited from being in public without a male chaperone, the mother and daughter are desperate, so they disguise the daughter as a boy named “Osama.” While the plan is a good temporary fix, the Taliban begins enlisting boys for their training school, and Osama fears it is only a matter of time before she is discovered. Students are invited to watch the movie, then engage in a discussion reflecting on the film. There will be free food at this event.

Friday, April 3: 

1 and 3 p.m. GRCC baseball and softball teams will face Bay College in a doubleheader at Belknap Park. The games will be livestreamed on the GRCC Athletics YouTube channel. Admission is free for GRCC students and staff with a valid RaiderCard.

3:30 to 4 p.m. Cinema Society is meeting in room 219 of the ATC. Show up to discuss film in all of its glory, from the film itself to scripts, costumes, and historical and cultural contexts of films.
