On Monday, April 13, at 11:45 a.m., while an officer was patrolling Grand Rapids Community College, he noticed two individuals who were previously caught having sex in an unlocked bathroom on the first floor of the Applied Technology Center back in February

In the most recent incident, the officer was able to locate the male heading to a single stall bathroom on the second floor using the Verkada camera system, but was unable to locate the female. The officer headed to the bathroom in question and noticed that something had been placed between the floor and the bottom of the door. The officer then requested backup with another officer en route as the reporting officer looked around the area. As the officer returned, he noticed the male, who was a former student, walking south down the hallway towards the exits. The officer asked the man’s identity, which the man confirmed before continuing toward the exits. The officer continued following him, advising the other officer of his location, but the man left campus before the other officer could make contact.

The officers were able to make contact with the female, who agreed to go to the GRCC Police Department with them. When interviewed, the woman admitted to having sex in the bathroom again, though she stated they locked the door this time and blocked the crack under the door. She asked the officers if this would be referred to student conduct, which the officer said it would, and that if she got caught again, she would be charged criminally. The woman said she understood and left GRCC P.D. The officer also attempted to call the male, who didn’t answer, with the officer leaving him a voicemail saying that if the former student returned to campus again, he would be charged with trespassing.

The Collegiate reached out to the Student Life Director, Valerie Hargraves, who stated she had to check to see if she could release information about the disciplinary action that resulted from this incident.

Editor’s note: The Collegiate was able to determine through a Freedom of Information Request that the student involved was given academic probation for an undisclosed amount of time.
