On June 25, from 1 to 3 p.m., Grand Rapids Community College students are invited to gather in the Juan Oliverez Student Plaza for “Prime Time for the Primary,” an event run by Student Government. Students can learn about the upcoming primary election as they enjoy a selection of free food and games.
“This event is intended to be a fun way to get students ready for the election on August 4th and celebrate America’s 250th,” stated Adeline Butts, Student Government President. “We’ll be sharing information on the election, getting people registered to vote, and having fun while doing it with games, music, and more.”
Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, baked beans, and popsicles are available to students who are registered to vote either in advance or at the event.
“Voting should matter for GRCC students because the officials that we elect make decisions that affect our education directly,” Butts stated. “Voting in elections gives students the chance to have a say in those decisions.”
On Aug. 4, voters across Michigan are expected to turn out for the Congressional, State, and Gubernatorial Primary Election. The Student Government wants to encourage GRCC students to be among the crowd.
“We hope that students understand the importance of civic engagement and get energized for the election,” Butts stated. “It is crucial for everyone to know that they have a voice and can speak their mind with their vote. We also want to stress the importance of voting in every election, not just for the presidency, as there are many local and statewide races every year.”
